Resource Protection Programs

Protecting our natural resources and cultural rights

Sitka Tribe of Alaska works to perpetuate Haa Ḵusteeyí – our traditional way of life – through the observance of Yáa at Wooné — respect for all things. The Tribe’s natural resource programs employ both Traditional Ecological Knowledge and western science to observe, study, and protect the land, waters, and living organisms of Sheet’ká.

Brownfields

Industrial contamination of land and water is an ongoing legacy of colonialism in Sheet’ká. Sitka Tribe is documenting pollution and advocating for cleanup.

Environmental Education Programs

We are educating the next generation of Tribal youth to take their turn in caring for the land, waters, atmosphere, and living beings that have sustained our people from time immemorial.

Environmental Research Lab

Our people have always studied the ocean and the beings that inhabit it. Our lab employs western science as a tool to supplement Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

Fisheries

Fish and shellfish have sustained our people since time immemorial. We conduct research to understand local fisheries, and advocate for the ecosystems that sustain them.

Kayaaní Commission

The Kayaaní Commission is a group of elders and experienced plant harvesters who work to protect Sheet’ká’s native plants and preserve Lingít plant knowledge.

Traditional Foods

Sitka Tribe of Alaska defends the rights of our citizens to harvest traditional foods. We work to provide safe and widespread access to wild fish, game, berries, and other traditional sources of sustenance from our traditional territory. Learn more about the Tribe’s work around subsistence.
