Resource Protection

The Resource Protection Department is championed with protecting cultural and natural resources within the traditional territory of Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) and protecting the rights of tribal citizens to access those resources.  It is one of six departments under STA and it staffs the Kayaani and Sitka Marine Mammal Commissions (SMMC) along with the Cultural, Customary and Traditional (CC&T), Herring, and Commercial Fisheries Committees.

The Department utilizes compact and grant funds to cover staff salaries and program or project expenses.  Currently the Department implements: the Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program's (FRMP) Klag Lake Subsistence Sockeye Salmon Stock Assessment, the Department of Defense's (DoD) Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program (NALEMP), the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Indian Environmental General Assistance Program (IEGAP), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), State Tribal Response Program (STRP), harmful algal bloom monitoring program (HAB), Southeast Alaska Tribal Toxins (SEATT), Sitka Tribe of Alaska Environmental Regulatory Lab (STAERL), and the STA Traditional Foods Program.
